A Signed Kashan Masterwork Attributed to Grand Master Mohammad Dabir Al-Sanayeh, Persia, Early to Mid 20th Century
This hand-knotted Persian Kashan pictorial rug is a masterful composition attributed to Grand Master Mohammad Dabir Al‑Sanayeh—one of the most celebrated carpet weavers of the 20th century. Rendered in lustrous kork wool, the rug presents a richly narrative tableau combining romantic, mythological, and architectural motifs, framed within a densely ornamented floral border populated by birds and flowering boughs.
At the centre of the composition, a regal female figure and attendant ride a vivid red horse, flanked by an armed escort on foot. To the left, a male figure kneels in reverence, emerging from stylised mountains while gesturing toward a palace or temple structure. A seated monarch or deity appears within an architectural niche below, evoking themes of divine authority or ancestral memory. In the background, mountainous landscapes, minarets, and distant castles evoke a fantastical Persian setting filled with symbolism and visual storytelling.
The intricate border features birds among vines and blossoms, reinforcing themes of love, fertility, and paradise—motifs deeply embedded in Persian artistic tradition. The top border bears a cartouche inscribed in Persian script, identifying the work as a signed piece by Grand Master Dabir (محمد دبیر الصناع), further affirming its provenance and craftsmanship.
Rugs bearing Dabir’s signature are rare and highly sought after, representing the peak of Kashan artistry during the early to mid 20th century.
